Pigs

My middle child who we will nickname "The Monkey". Due to the fact that this boy can climb pretty much anything. It's amazing. I have all 3 of my boys in gymnastics this fall. They are do excited to learn tricks & climb & do what they do every where else but with a teacher to show them more.

Back to the story.

The monkey has been asking for pigs to raise for years. Literally. Last weekend my husband had a surprise for him.

You guessed it pigs. 2 gilts to be exact. (That is a girl pig who hasn't had babies yet.). They are only weaner pigs. (Babies that have just been weaned.)

So they need to grow up a but, before we can breed them, but the monkey had a whole plan figured out. It goes something like this:

Get girl pigs. Let them have babies. Keep the baby girl pigs, sell the boy pigs. Make money. Let all the girl pigs have more babies. Keep the girl pigs, so they can have more babies. Sell the boy pigs & make more money. Let the girl pigs have more babies . . . You get the idea. Not a bad business plan for a 4 year old.

So everyday the monkey heads out to with our slop bucket. (leftover meal scraps) And feeds pinkie and rainbow. That is what he named them. Anyways he couldn't be happier. The best surprise ever. Got to love those pigs.

Satisfying

I have never considered myself an artist. That would be my sister, but lately I have been so intrigued by some art I have seem on various blogs. It gives me a little yearning to try my hand at it. Yesterday I read blog here at www.yesandamenblog.blogspot.com. She encouraged anyone to try everyday to create some form of art. Beginner especially. And so I decided to give it a go, and though I have so much room to grow it was amazingly satisfying & enjoyable to my soul. So here is a glimpse of my last two days art.

I know there is room for improvement but just trying is So satisfying. I can't wait to try again tomorrow.

Pure Goodness

This morning I met up with my amazing mother to pick up a couple of bowls of these:

Fresh raspberries. There is not a whole lot of things better in this world then fresh raspberries. A bowl of raspberries & milk with a little sugar is heaven in my bowl. I love August, if only for fresh berries. I hope life is treating you as good.

Brownies

I made brownies tonight & they were delicious. I have had a hard time finding a recipe that everyone in the house all like. Either one person likes it & another one doesn't. Tonight I finally made a winner & wanted to share it.

Brownies
2 1/4 c. Flour
3 c. White sugar
3 cubes of butter
4 eggs & 1 egg white.
2 tsp. Vanilla
3/4 c. Cocoa (this wasn't exact just until it looks good)
walnuts (optional)

Mix cocoa & sugar. Melt butter & add to mixture. Add rest of ingredients Adding flour last. Mix well. It will be pretty thick. We added a handful or two of walnuts at the very end. Pour into a greased 9x13 pan. Bake at 350 degrees for about 30-35 or until a butter knife comes out clean.
Simple, delicious, & rich enough you only need one. Or maybe 2 with a glass milk. Either way enjoy!!!

Crop dusters

You know those days when you have every intention to sleep in, but for some reason those are always the ones where you can't. Today was such a morning. I had every intention not to set my alarm & just wake up whenever. So what happened this morning at the crack of dawn? Our rooster who never before made a noise decided to find his voice this morning & crow. Crow he did for a very long time. I suffered through it. Then just as I fell back to sleep here came the crop duster. Who happened to be by the fields near our home & buzzed our house with each pass. I groaned, gave up, & left everyone else asleep to sneak off for a morning walk. But just as I started the crop duster came buzzing by again. I must admitt I watched memorized for a few minutes. The pilot has some amazing aeronautics skills. It was quite fun to watch. And so my day began. Maybe tomorrow I will try sleeping in.

Fresh Cherry Pie

So the other day I was giving a message that the cherries were ready for picking. So I loaded up the 3 boys & we headed down to pasture to start picking.
Now this was actually the first time in my life I have ever picked cherries. It was kind of fun, (probably the novelty of the 1st time).

The cherry tree. So the tree wasn't as loaded as we hoped for, but anything was better than nothing.
Today I finally got around to making the pie.

I found a recipe online that required these ingredients, plus sugar & pies. I will try to remember & share it later.

You mix them all together & then let them sit for 15 minutes . While I was waiting I made the pie crust. A delicious recipe I will share at a later date.

Then pour in your cherries when your time is up.

I was a little short on cherries, so it didn't quite fill it up as much as I would like.

Put the top on & put that baby in the oven until it is golden delicious. Kind of like this one:

Okay it smelled & looked a lot better than it does here. At this point in time it took some self discipline. My first thoughts to dive in & start eating it. Then my darling husband reminded me it needed to cool so that it could kind of gel. I tried waiting, but finally gave in & dished it up.

It probably did need a few more minutes, but I couldn't wait any more. It was delicious! Probably the best cherry pie I have eaten. But maybe that is because I did everything needed from picking, to pitting, to eating. One of the cool things I think about life from country roads. : )
-Until later,
Me.

P.S I am looking for a good price on a cherry tree if anyone knows of one.
